Cactus family
Succulents are in the cactus family. They don't require watering as much as regular plants. Plus using a mixture of loam and sand is good for them. You can buy this mixture in bags. I think I've seen this made by Scott's.
They are a particular variety of cactus that have thick and fleshy parts which allow them to retain water. I put large rocks in the bottom of my pots before adding soil, as well as adding gravel to the soil, when I pot succulent plants.

Pop into any nursery and look for the succulent section. I am in zone 9 and they grow like weeds for me.
Or just Google: "What do succulents look like."
