How to attract birds to a feeding house?

I got the idea from Hometalk so went ahead and built one there is plenty of room so it is not enclosed or threatening the birds in anyway but must be doing something wrong I use just plain wild bird thought about molasses honey treacle etc but don't want it to turn into a ant house

How long have you had it up? It takes some time for the birds to find it. I put a feeder on my window last year, and it wasn't until this Winter that they fully took advantage of it.
I have found that adding a bird bath, or a water source close by the feeding station will attract the birds also (everything must drink).
