Is it real wood?

It looks like laminate paneling that comes in 4x8 sheets and it does not look like real wood. Some people use drywall compound to cover the grooves before painting. There is a paintable wallpaper you can install over it that will give it a flat surface before painting. friend did this on the top half of her den and put a chair rail on the bottom. It looked really nice.
