Try setting a few mouse traps in the areas where the squirrels tend to go. If you are concerned that this will hurt the buggars then glue a small piece of wood onto the trap so it cannot close all the way. They should be put off by the trap snapping. Put an anti-squirrel bird feeder in your yard where you will not mind the squirrels hanging out. They cannot resist trying for the seeds.
If you have dogs train them to run the squirrels off.
I had a squirrel problem, cutting down bird feeders, and getting on the patio making a mess. After putting the feeders up, several times, I gave up and set up a feeding station for all the visitors to the yard. The squirrels and birds all ate together happily and they stopped coming onto the patio and making a mess.
I have used the mouse trap baited with peanut butter for chipmunks in my veggie garden. Both they and squirrels are really too big to get trapped, but the snap scared the bejesus out of the chipmunks and they didn't come back to that area. If you have large areas to cover, put one by the worst spots to start and go from there covering everywhere you need to. Keep an eye out for any return and do that area again. I even used them in my raised hosta garden when they dig in there and in my huge half wine barrels where they love to dig. I also use cayenne pepper powder sprinkled in gardens and follow it with shredded Irish spring bar soap. That helps keep the rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks from eating and digging and I have had good luck with that. You can't do that on your patio, but it does help in the gardens for me, especially when plants are young and tender.
