How can I paint or clean this ugly fireplace insert?
We have a vent-free fireplace and use gas logs. This is the original fireplace insert which has been in since 2001. It has become discolored at the top (looks like dust but won't come off so far) plus the brass trim on the top and bottom came loose so we just took both strips off. Is there something we can clean it with, should we simply paint it, or take it out and buy a brand new insert (not sure how much that would cost)? We haven't used it a lot so maybe it really is dust, but it won't budge with major scrubbing. it's an eyesore, and I'm totally sick of it. Any ideas to make it look new again are most appreciated?

You can remove the front panel to spray paint it. Use stove paint so it will stand up to the heat. Replacing the whole unit would be about $5000. You might also be able to purchase just the front piece from a stove distributor is you know the make and model number.
Hi Debbie
I know here in GA that replacing fire place inserts are costly! I would paint it. Here are some ideas that may help you.

Gee, I sort of like it as a beginning point lol! Clean out the insert itself so there isn't anything to mar your new finishes. Check w/ a distributor and ask if these need some kind of pro cleaning as idk.
I would remove the surround (you can use the mantel and surround elsewhere) and tile the entire facade up to the ceiling. Also do the return sides so it looks solid. Choose a tile that draws the eye as focal point, something that goes with your style, is timeless (if you may sell soon), and is affordable. Think something like porcelain tile like this 8" x 12" at a cost of $1.69/sq. ft.

You could add some kind of metal mantel if that fits your style. I'd have one welded into a "L" so that there's both a flat surface and perpendicular for depth.
Install a flat tv mount prior to tiling and you'll have an entirely new look for the entire place! 😎
