We use a 3-month preventative pill 3 times per year (none in winter). The pill works to keep fleas and ticks off so we don't have to try to remove them.
Clean clean clean some more. I have a couple senior dogs where it is not advisable to give them pills or use the topical treatments. I spray the perimeter of my property and base of my house with vinegar once a month. Must be repeated after every rain event. Here are some methods for you to try.

Dawn dish soap, bathe dog. fleas don't like the smell of lavender ,peppermint , lemongrass and chrysanthemums. Plant in pots keep near doors windows move as needed. I use essential oil add to water and when my dog drys after a bath I lightly spray him. The fleas don't like vinegar or lemon juice either. Hope this will work for you too, Sue
