I have a whole house of old furniture that the house smells from just closed up being old and was a smoker's house. How do you get the smell out of the furniture and other items in the house, including old clothes that are salvageable, some even brand new with tags, but smell?

  • Products like Fabreze will not be good enough. I would pay to have it cleaned by a professional, they have chemical to eliminate odors.

I would use ODOBAN spray. My husband bought a car that was previously owned by a smoker and was able to get the smell out within a couple of months by continuously spraying ODOBAN and airing it out. The clothes should all be washed ...maybe a couple/few times. Use vinegar in the first load and the second load, use strong scented crystals or strong scented fabric softener along with your detergent. I think the crystals are much stronger though.

Also, if any of the furniture in the house needs to be redone:

I second the OdoBan recommendation. I've used it in vehicles with great success.

  • Clothes can all be salvaged. Add vinegar and baking soda to the wash and vinegar in the rinse cup, no fabric softener. Furniture, if possible should be moved outdoors and set in the sun for a few days. Wipe the interior with a vinegar water solution. Wash the wood furniture with Murphy's Oil Soap. Upholstered furniture needs to be steam cleaned or discarded. You will need a "clean room" so as not to bring cleaned items back in - you don't want them to be recontaminated. The house itself is a whole project in itself. The entire interior needs to be washed along with everything in it. Ceilings to floors, remove carpets and replace or at least have a professional cleaning. A vinegar water solution will work well, but TSP is far better. Curtains or drapes need to be laundered or sent out to the dry cleaners. Anything that can be washed in the kitchen sink or bathtub, do it.
