Hi Doreen. I'm Cindy. This is a great recipe for carpet cleaning:

    2 cups Baking Soda

    A half cup corn starch

    A half cup Corn Meal

    1 Tbsp Borax

    1 teasp Cinnamon

2 or 3 dry Bay Leaves

Put all ingredients in food processor until it is a fine powder. Store this in a jar with lid. Sprinkle on carpet and spread further with a broom. Let it set overnight and then vacuum. The scent from the cinnamon and bay leaves is heavenly.

Do not use on a wet carpet.

I use vinegar in my steamer. The scent fades rather quickly.

For a freshener, I sprinkle baking soda and vacuum up 30 minutes later. I prefer "clean" to scented.

Spot cleaning? to use in actually carpet cleaner machines as solution? What kind of carpet-synthetic,natural fibers? Regular everyday soiling?pets-hair,oils,smelly? complete rinsing is essential especially with any soap products left over soap residue will cause carpet to get dirty faster because it attracts the dirt causing it to stick to carpet surface
