Do I need to sand these closet doors before painting?

I’m going to be painting these closet doors white. Do I need to sand them totally down to the bare wood first?? Or can I just rough them up with some sand paper, then paint. They have some kind of shellac on them.
Connie....I would sand to get shellac off. You can prime then paint also.
You can use a liquid deglosser to get the shellac off. Then clean with denatured alcohol. I would prime with Kilz Original to eliminate bleed through. Then paint.
I would sand with a fine grit sandpaper just to dull the shine down. Then clean well and use a primer first. I would use a paint in a matte enamel finish. Makes for easier cleaning.
The shinier the finish the more prep. work needed before painting. # 1 rule to refinishing anything. OR you can use Kilz Adhesion high bonding primer first
Just lightly sand with 220 grit sand paper to remove any shine. Wipe down well with a damp cloth. Prime with Kilz primer then paint. A foam roller and foam brush will give you a smooth finish.
TSP cleaner would help. Then prime and paint?
