Paint the lower portion white.
I agree, but would also do the tops apron and edge. I'd do chalk paint and distress

Use a vintage oil cloth or patterned vinyl tablecloth to protect the top if you have young children. Possibly use a crocheted tablecloth if that is not the case. Leave the original finish alone for another generation to appreciate.
I'm not really into 'farmhouse' but I was recently in a home decorated that way. The stain on the dining table was quite dark, maybe mahogany, and they had a red & white checkerboard table cloth. It fit perfectly with their decor. Just sayin'.
