You must use cement board behind the tile. In order to make it flat, you should use a board or steel screening behind the cement board..

You could build up a box and place it into the niche. There is a wall fabric that is placed on the walls before tiling so be sure to look into this before starting to tile. It is waterproof and prevents damage to the walls.
