Why is the water heater noisier than previously?
I have a "powervent" water heater, that is now making more noise than it used too. Recently had gas thermostat replaced. Unit is approximately 8-10 years old. Does the blower assembly on top need periodic cleaning or oiling?

I'm not sure about your type of water heater but I know mine has to be 'bled' from time to time. I think the rule of thumb is once a year but not sure.
No, the blower on top just exhausts the flue gases. Does not need cleaning or oiling. It's a sealed bearing motor. Can you hear where it is louder or where the noise is located?. Is it the blower or the new gas valve? Is it the proper gas valve for the heater installed. It could be the wrong gas valve and the vent blower is unable to handle the load. It could be the vent blower motor is starting to fail. If the noise is a cracking or popping noise there is sediment on the bottom of the tank. Draining one gallon of water every month will extend the life.
It wouldn't surprise me, after so many years. Why not call the manufacturer and ask? Have the serial number ready when you call.
Every water heater has a life span listed on the container. You should replace it according to the age regardless if it is giving you issues or not.
I have a Rheem Power Vent 50 gal tank. It shows mfg date, but NO expiration or replace date, any where on label.
