For a quick refresh, sprinkle baking soda on it and let it sit a while, (sometimes I do overnight), then vacuum up. Do you have stains? Steam cleaning is what I have done, you can buy your own machine or rent from a grocery store or home improvement center.

If a large carpet, borrow or hire a steam cleaner such as Rug Doctor from your local DIY store, or use something like 10001 added to water and use a sponge as instructions.
Hello- I like the rental from Rug Dr. machines that you see at the supermarket. We find that it clean so thoroughly ( extracted waste water) we purchased our own Rug doctor steam cleaner from Costco.
