Hi Susan! Prep your table with a good cleaning. That will make it easier to sand and/or strip the current finish. Any finish already on the table will interfere with your new finish. It doesn't have to be bare wood. But, any gloss, shine, etc. will keep the paint from being durable so you want to get it off. Once you've prepared, I would paint the top gray. Then, I would apply watered down white paint (half water and half paint in a small container is a good way to determine how thin you want the whitewash). Try it over the gray paint on a scrap piece of wood to see if this is the coverage/look you want. You can try it in different proportions to get the consistency you want. I use empty jars or yogurt containers for my mixtures. I like latex paint for projects like this, but, have also used chalk paint. Once you have the look you want, let it dry thoroughly for a day or two
Then apply a water based sealer. Let it dry, according to manufacturer's directions. I then lightly go over it, with fine steel wool. Wipe it down thoroughly, apply another coat. I use this process for at least three coats.
Thank you so much!
HI Susan!
Here you go! Good luck!

You could paint the apron and legs grey, and then for the top of the table, paint it with thinned out paint, let it dry, give it a sanding and then give it a durable finish over that white wash with a water based poly.
