Hi Beth,
The first thing that will help is to water the area your dog uses immediately after use. That dilutes the urine so that it might not kill the grass. Try to train your dog to use one area so that it doesn't affect your entire yard. That way, you can plan for that area not to have grass. Wishing you the best.
Females dogs that are spayed reportedly make less of a spot. Also make sure your dog has access to plenty of water, so the urine is less concentrated. Hose down the area soon after they urinate.
