How do I make a mantel for a fireplace
It depends on what you want to make it out of, how you want it to look when finished.
They can be a frosted glass shelf with ornamental brackets, a mosaic tiled “box”, a piece of barnwood and I can go on.
2nd big factor: what are you attaching to and how will you do that? Putting masonry nails into mortar won’t hold.
I recommend small lag screws/bolts into drilled holes in the brick or stone and then epoxied in. This means sizing & buying a masonry drill bit, as well as mixing batches of 2 part epoxy. French cleats would handle any box or frame.
If you want to build a wood box with legs and have it stand on its own two feet, then it needs to be minimum 18” away from the firebox on all 3 sides. You’ll still need to attach it to the face of the fireplace.
I can be more detailed when you help us narrow it down.
