You have to sand them down and get the old paint off. It's quite a job worth it in the end. Make sure they are real wood or you will have a mess
Give them all a light sanding to knock the gloss off the current finish. Prime with a good primer and use something like Fusion mineral paint for a solid, scratch resistant finish. You don't need to spray paint them- we got a nice finish just using microfiber paint rollers:

You can use a chalk based product like Fusion Mineral Paint. It can be painted on with very little prep. They also have a primer product you can use on very shiny surfaces first. You can find a retailer near you by visiting here... https://fusionmineralpaint.com/where-to-buy/

You can repaint them, but you may need to sand them first.
