How can I stop the cat from scratching the furniture?
My cat is an inside cat but has claws. She is about 10 years old and I have given her things to scratch on. How do I discourage her from scratching wood chairs, cloth chairs, walls, carpeting, everything?
Add on apparently needed, Kitty WILL NOT allow petting for more that 30 seconds and she's done, no trimming nails-not even with the Vet after she bit them and now to be trimmed, $$ and $$ for gassing so they can trim nails, no brushing for more than 30 seconds and only around her head and down her back. Does not allow other people to touch her. Tried the Kitty Tree inside and after that fell, she won't get near one. She bits and scratches and since never had a mother to teach her, husband and I are only ones ever allowed to touch her and husband passed and I'm it now. Used to allow my Mom to pet her before she passed. Very finicky kitty!!

Hi this is Peggy. Sorry your cat is scratching furniture. Cats love new things, boxes, sacks and lots of perches to look outdoors. Hope this gives you some hint for stopping your fur baby from scratching. Destructive Scratching | ASPCA
Turn speakers toward the wall. Put plastic, double-sided sticky tape, sandpaper or upside-down vinyl carpet runner (knobby parts up) on furniture or on the floor where your cat would stand to scratch your furniture. Place scratching posts next to these objects, as “legal” alternatives. Clip your cat's nails regularly.
I found distraction helps. I hung small bells on places the cat liked to scratch on ribbons. They distracted her from the door frame and furniture. Also rub catnip on the scratching posts.
Start training immediately! Here are some things you can do.

There are 6 rescue cats in my house. They are semi feral and indoor outdoor cats and not adoptable in a traditional sense. But, the minute I took them in, the training started. They have their own scratching items strewn about the house and the stump of an old tree in the yard, which is their favorite. Once I had them trained, the house and it's contents were safe. There are also 3 dogs, a canary and a dragon, so they have a lot of activity and many visiting pets too, so they don't get bored too easily.
Fill spray bottle with water. Spray every time pussy does something wrong. She’ll get the message. Later on when she sees the bottle or you make spraying noises, she’ll be out of there. I’ve used it with every cat I’ve had. Use it to keep them off counters & furniture too.
I use a product called sticky paws and it's pretty much fixed the problem. I have alternative scratching areas for her near her favorite vicinities.
If it fit over the whole chair, perhaps that might do it...
