What are you trying to do?
I would get it serviced as you may have a short somewhere.
Double check your wiring in the thermostat. The outside unit should not run on auto. Your furnace should be the only one to run on auto. The thermostat set temperature turns the outside unit on. If it's running on auto then only the fan is running and not the compressor. The motor can burn out. I actually run my furnace blower on auto all the time. It blends the house air evenly whether the heat or AC is on or not. I can't stand the blast of air (hot or cold) on start up and the reverse on shutdown.
I would have it serviced.
William would know.
We had this same issue. The system would always say it was off on the wall display but it was on in the house. We had a service and now it works fine. They said it just needed the sensors cleaning where ever they are.
If it was a short it would trip a breaker or burn the wires. You meant to say an open. People use the term short wrongly. A short is when electricity take the shortest path to ground. An open indicates there's an open circuit or a broken wire, or a lose connection.
Getting back to the problem, i dont understand you say outside unit and inside unit of the furnace. The A C system has an outside and inside unit. The inside unit is the blower, that's what blows the hot and cold air through your ducts. As William mentioned you may have a broken wire, you need to take the cover off the bottom section of your furnace and check all the wires, that's where your thermostat wires go.
Without having a look at it in person, it's really hard to pinpoint the cause of your issue. A lot of these little issues can all be avoided with regular furnace maintenance. It might be best to have your area HVAC contractor come out and inspect the system to get your furnace working properly again.
It looks like a problem to do with incomplete/incorrect thermostat wiring . I hope this can help https://homeaircentral.com/furnace-will-not-turn-on-with-thermostat/ or check on youtube about thermostat wiring.
