Joyce, before you do anything, make sure that the old lamp can be safely taken outside. Many old lamps are wired differently and are not meant to be used outside, which can cause potential electrical failures, shocks, etc. To be honest, I wouldn't do it. I would buy an exterior light fixture for this project to protect you and your home.
There are light kits to do this but is this inside or out?
I agree with Fiddle. The big problem is water intrusion, rain/snow/ice.
There has to be gaskets & “drip paths” to make sure no water gets into the wiring.
Also the exposed materials have to be UV stable.
