Are you using piddle pads? A 5 year old dog can still be house broken, it just takes patience and consistency. Everyone in the house has to be on the same page. Here are some sites to get you started.

When you are home, pick him up and carry him out to the area you want him to use. Do this every couple of hours. After a few days, call him and let him walk to the designated area. Praise thoroughly and give him a treat when he succeeds. Do not scold if he doesn't, it's counter productive. I use the itsy bitsy training biscuits available just about everywhere.
I have trained all the dogs and visiting dogs where they are to do their business. Easier for me to clean up and keeps the rest of the lawn clean for rolling and playing.
Hi Alice. You just have to stay on him. When I trained my dogs I let them out every hour, and praised them so much when they went potty out side. I also made sure that if the dog got up from laying down that I followed and watched them. If you catch him in the act you can grab him (he'll stop peeing)and put him out right away. I wish you luck. It takes a lot of patience but can be done.

Yes, above answers are correct. Take him out every hour and use lots of praise and treats. Crate him when you are not home and immediately go out with him when you return.
Another trick I learned is if he still has a place where he "goes" inside, feed him in that place.
Lots of patience is necessary. GOOD luck.
I've trained dogs for years, I agree crate training is only way to go, this teaches him to develop bladder control..... you will also have to put this crate next to bed at night and get up when he whines. The crate an only be big enough for him to stand and turn around. He won't like wetting himself that increase his developing bladder control.
If he has an accident, you need to clean that area with a pet enzyme cleaner otherwise he will go there all the time.
If this doesn't work, take to vet, as he could have a UTI or other issue.
