I would strip and sand it first.

If it's in good shape, you can scuff up then clean, prime, and paint. If it's in bad shape you would have to strip, make repairs, perhaps sand, then clean, prime, and paint.

Lisa: I use this product all the time. No prep for wood, etc! (Please take off hardware -- unless you want a shabby-chic look.)

Use Stain instead of Paint. You will thank me later.

Avoid painting good cherry. It is a hardwood meant to last centuries. Painted furniture is a passing trend. Ruined furniture from this fad is already showing up at the salvation army store near to where I live. Buy some Restore a Finish in cherry - it will spruce up the piece to it's original beauty. Cost about $9.00 , some old rags and plastic gloves. Be finished in an hour or less. Then just wax over it.
