Hi this is Peggy. Here are some instructions on painting a storm door. Good luck with your project. Primer will ensure better paint adhesion to the door while also resulting in a color that is truer to the shade you picked out. The threepaint options for the door are spray paint, latex or enamel. Spray paints work best on metal doors. For best results, sand and primer your metal door before using spray paint.

Aluminum storm doors have an anodized finish and I would think twice about sanding off the anodizing.

    Aluminum corrodes, not rusts.

Whether it’s aluminum or wood, it will need to be sanded & cleaned before priming with an appropriate primer.

Then 2 coats of finish paint.

Scuff with fine steel wool. Tape up screen and glass areas, cover with newspaper. Clean with denatured alcohol. Then you are ready to prime & paint. Make sure to use a paint that is formulated for the type of material your door is, RustOleum is my go to brand.

It is always helpful to know what the door is made of. Find a primer and a paint that is right for your door by reading the labels. I am not a fan of paint and primer in one product. Primer is the most important step especially on an outdoor project or a project that was painted before you got to it. Clean the door before you prime. I suggest you use a fine sponge/foam roller. Using this type of roller leaves a very nice small texture that blends away imperfections in the metal. If you have a place to work on the door, it will be helpful to remove it and put across 2 saw horses. If you have to paint the door in place avoid priming or painting when the door is in the sun and hot. Remove the handle, the hydraulic piston, and the spring & chain at the top. Once they are clean use a spray primer and follow up with spray paint.
