I think you can repair the same as a hollow core, stuff the hole with paper towels then foam "expanding" filler. Shave off even. Then sand and you are ready to prep for painting.
Since you said you were going to paint , I recommend Bondo. It is a two part epoxy automotive body filler. The stuff is great because it cures quick, it is easy to sand and it is readily available. And if your current cabinets have a texture, you can even use a stiff brush to brush some grain into the repair. Use it once and you will be hooked on repairing just about everthing with it.
Hello Jeanine,
The advise you have already been given by Kathy and V.Smith will both work, It's your choice. Good luck!
Fill in the hole with expanding foam. That stuff is amazing!! Let it completely dry and then sand it down and paint it. I had a huge hole on the floor of my cabinet and with using the expanding foam and sanding and painting it, you can't even tell there was a hole there. Good Luck!!!
It's called Great Stuff for cracks and gaps.
