You could use chalk paint!! It’s so easy to use. See my tips here: https://www.aratariathome.com/blog/chalk-paint-tips
I would definitely spend a little time prepping the old surface for the new paint. Sanding and a primer will help the new paint adhere better. Chalk paint with a creme wax finish is always a great choice! Good luck!
Clean the years of use and possibly wax off of it with some warm soapy water and steel wool (or a brillo pad). Rinse well and let dry. Strip and/or sand off old finish. Prevent bleed through of stain or old paint by using a good sealer like Kilz. Now you have a surface you can use paint on.
