Depending on what the seats are made of you could sand them down and paint them. If the seats are removable you could recover them and add extra padding before doing that. A picture would help, or more details so we know exactly what you're dealing with.
I don't know what your chairs are made of. But I like to use spray paint for ugly furniture. You'll probably need to do a bit of sanding first. And be sure to use a good primer like BIN.
Yes, I am also thinking of sanding with 220 grit sand paper and you could use a gel stain to make them pretty!
