I have a builder marble fire place and want to tile over the marble with a granite tile. The tile is not very thick, maybe 1/4" or so.
Best to remove the existing tile. Any imperfections will transfer to new tiles. Also extra weight can cause both tiles to fall off.
I agree with William, best to remove and place new. However, I have seen it done in a shower if you'd like to peek at it. https://www.hometalk.com/diy/bathroom/showers-tubs/new-life-to-old-bathroom-tile-surround-title-over-title-yes-you-can-35733661
New Life to Old Bathtub Surround. “Tile Over Tile” Yes You Can
Same as you tile your floor. What tiles are you going to use?
I was told by a fireplace mantel manufacturer that I could tile over existing tile on my fireplace, as long as I used an industrial adhesive. Haven't tried it yet, but, as long as existing tile is well attached, and what is used to go over that isn't heavy or big, I dont know why it wouldn't be worth a try.
