You can lay a rug in the grass mix up a batch of soapy water and scrub with a flat bottom broom and scrub back and forth. Hose off the soap very well and hang on a fence or wall to let it drip dry. If it is a low texture rug you can paint or stencil it.
I have a 5 X 8 rug I use in my kitchen and I take it outside on the driveway about twice a year and hose it down, use a small amount of cleaning solution (dish soap and/or PineSol) and use a broom to clean the rug. Rinse well and hang over my railing (or some place else to hang it to dry). Make sure it is dry before putting it back on your floor.
If you can take it outside, hosing it down or power washing it should clean it up. If it's too large or fastened consider renting or borrowing a steam cleaner.
depending on what it is made of. If it's got wool in it forget washing it, it will never lay flat again.
