'Old brick' is too vague of a description to really know what it looks like.
Please post a picture so that we can see what you have to work with.
Thank you.
When remodeling a small den, we had a red brick fireplace that really did nothing for the room. On a whim, we decided to paint it the same off white color as the walls ( except for the hearth). This turned out to be a great decision for our project because it brought the focus to the hearth and some pretty pottery /crocks which we placed there for decor. Paint is a quick and inexpensive way to give your fireplace a new look. Best wishes!

Oh Jeannie! There are so many ways to makeover your fireplace! You can cover the brick with plywood and molding, you could faux shiplap over the brick, or of course you can paint or German Schmear the brick! Sometimes just updating the mantle can make a world of a difference! A picture would really help me to get an idea of what would work the best!
