Hi Annie, here's how to do it! https://www.today.com/series/how-often-should-you/how-clean-washing-machine-t20131
They have special enzyme cleaning packets you can buy to clean your washing machine. I would suggest those. Here is my affiliate link to them https://amzn.to/2Z7kbyy . They are specially formulated tablets that dissolve slowly, lasting throughout the entire wash cycle and breaking up odor causing residue better than bleach. They should be used monthly.
Are you using liquid soap, or gel sachets? The mouldy slime build up inside the machine is terrible if so. I had the same problem and this works well, make sure you clean the door seal too.
To clean the machine, remove smells and flush away bacteria, add 500g of Soda Crystals to the drum on an empty cycle and run it on the longest hottest wash. (If you have hard water and have limescale do it again but add 500ml of White Vinegar or 250g of Citric Acid to the drum, and run an empty cycle again on the longest hottest wash.) I found this soda method better than a bought washing machine cleaner which was disappointing and expensive.
I've switched back to powder for over 6 months now and it hasn't happened since, before that my washing was coming out smelling stale and worse than before the wash.
When I bought mine, they told me to leave it open as much as possible and run bleach through the cleaning cycle once a month. If you don't have a cleaning cycle, then wash with bleach then twice without. Leaving mine open has been enough to keep mine fresh.
