Is the wood painted? If the paint is peeling, you'll probably have to sand and repaint.

This dresser that I re-did had a lot of issues!! The wood on the drawer fronts was peeling since this dresser was left out in the rain. Definitely check out how we removed the veneer to reveal the smooth wood underneath. This method made it SOOO much easier. Good luck!
How to Remove Wood Veneer Easier!!
If there are only a few bad patches, you can use Polyfilla or some other spackle to fill small sections, sand the door and paint.
