You want to paint china? It can only be for looks. You will not be able to use it or wash it. Just brush it on after you clean it.
I think Patricia means in the style of China, not china pieces. I don't understand "chalk" paint and esp not for chinoiserie which usually has a highly finished surface. These are decoupaged pieces with a Chinese theme, but not really chinoiserie. I could be wrong but I think Chalk paint and chinoiserie are incompatible.
Any raised Chinoiserie design would need to be sanded down to get rid of any pattern created by the paint, texture medium and lacquer. If the Chinoiserie is created by the use of stencils or appliques, sand over the design and be sure to cover the design well with paint (or a stain-blocker primer) to prevent any remnant from showing through. Good luck!
All the Chinese pieces I have are lacquered with many coats, and gold leaf and bright paints for the designs. When I have painted pieces for clients, I use wallpaper, art books, pictures of old pieces for inspiration. I have taken quite a few Chinese painting classes to get good brush control to achieve the flow that Chinese pieces speak to me.
If your wanting some raised areas, I have used metallic shades of puff paint on a few pieces. You can also use a stencil design and joint compound, let dry thoroughly and then paint the raised area..... these can also be done on wax paper and applied to the piece with glue. I have also appliqued cut out designs of old Asian papers to designs.
