You can put up something as farmhouse as plain pallet wood or even get peel and stick backsplash from home improvement! What ever you decided for your decor, Tabitha, it should be what YOU love and can do. If I can do the peel and stick (and there are endless choices now from metallic to wood to brick to ceramics) and multiple colors are available now too, well anyone should be able to do it!

You can buy peel and stick backsplash tiles at the dollar tree if you are looking to something on a budget. It can even be removed for renters.
