You could suspend open shelves between two cabinets, like we did. For plants you could even use cabinets on either side of a window and suspend the shelf in front of the window.

It will depend on the type of shelves. You can use "L" brackets and affix shelving board to them, floating shelves, or industrial pipes for supports.
