If you want to do it yourself, decide what brand of parts you want to use. Go online and follow their directions re mapping out your property. Provide this info to the company and they will plan the system, along with a parts list. Buy your parts. Rent a trencher. Install everything. Hook it into your plumbing. Install the controller. I like a rain detector feature. Test the system and correct spray patterns. Or hire the job out as it might be worthwhile.

Planning and design would be first. Then assembling the materials followed by the actual installation. Renting something to help trench out the perimeter might be useful versus hand digging. When we put in our irrigation line we had to use a reciprocating saw to remove tree roots in our pathway.
