Gwen....However you do it....DO NOT DO FLAT roof....make a pitch as a flat roof will only cause problems. I would call a good contractor and get suggestions. Good luck to you!
If the roof is permanently attached to the house, then it may be classified as an extension or addition, rather than just an improvement. I would suggest to check first with your home insurance carrier to see how your policy premiums may increase due to having a roof on a porch.
