Hi Penny,
If you just spray with a clear spray, it will not fix the color problem. If you're okay with the way it looks right now, then you CAN just spray it, but if you want to repair the color you'll need to sand it down to bare wood then restain the top. Then you can use a polyacrylic to protect the new finish. Wishing you the best.
I think I would sand it so that it looks more uniformed, and u might have to add a second coat wer ur trying to repair
Whatever you decide about how to redo the top, consider having glass or plexiglass cut to put on top of your piece. We have had this done on several of our wood and painted pieces that get a lot of use.
Before you sand the whole top, try wiping with a natural wood stain...one with no color added. If it is a real cherry top, the color may even out nicely. Might be able to rub on Minwax paste wax finish and buff by hand. This is very forgiving and easy to do. Also can be removed easily if you are not satisfied with color or sheen. Not as durable as the spray finish but might restore to previous look with little fear or elbow grease!
