Iti swells in their digestive system and kills them. there also is a product available at garden nurseries known as Beneficial Nematodes that kills a magnitude of insects. It requires specific application and frequent watering but lasts a couple of years. I had no problem with it affecting my flower bed plants but I did hear from a neighbor that it ruined his vegetable garden. For all I know maybe he didn't apply it properly
