Hi Joyce
To overwinter geraniums in dormant storage, dig up the entire plant before frost and gently shake the soil from the roots. Place the plants inside open paper bags or hang them upside-down from the rafters in a cool, dark location for the winter.
I bring my geranium in side on a rolling coaster. I also repotted it this summer and added packing peanuts to the bottom half of the HUGE pot in which it sits so it is not nearly so heavy (2/3 is packing peanuts or vermiculite) The vermiculite absorbs water and allows the roots to get the water when the top soil begins to dry out while it is sitting outside. Sometimes our fall days are dry for a month or more. It has not wilted at all or shown any harmful decline in blooms or new leaves since we added the vermiculite. (available at most home improvement stores that sell plants). I roll it under a big window for it to get direct sunlight part of the day and indirect the rest of the day. It is 5 yrs old now and better than ever. Hope this helps Joyce.
either bring in a keep in sunny window, or..cut down to about 4", remove from soil and place in paper bag and store where it won't freeze
My mom used to put the geraniums in their pots in a paper bags and then store them in the basement crawl space where it was dark and dry.
