Amanda two things come to mind. Chalk paint them and then distress them, OR paint them and use a Crackle compound to give a "crackle" old look. Either way would be great and crackling is really in vogue now. Hope this helps.
You can paint it, distress the edges with sandpaper, and then use a glaze over the paint.
