There are lots of way, Louann. You could refinish the wood - sand, stain, and use a topcoat. Paint is another option.
Switching out the hardware to new handles or knobs is a fast and easy way to change the look of a piece of furniture.

Hi! Painting is a great option! Check into chalk based or mineral based paints. Dixie Belle is super affordable starting at about $10 a pot.
Annie Sloan and Jolie work great too. No sanding with any of these paints!
