Get a bookcase, fasten a hollow core door on it. That should give you a simple kitchen island with overhang for seatin.
Put a few base cabinets together and add a top with at least 12" for overhang.

We put hinges and added a board that will pull up and used a piece of 1 x 4 to brace it up on our home made island for the same. Any dresser will work, just paint it and use the drawers on it for extra storage or shelving and the "extension" on the back for the seating.
