Hi Christina, Best wishes
First thing to do is Turn off your electricity supply during daylight! Remove all the bulbs. Try using WD-40 on a cloth to remove surface rust. Then use fine sandpaper to remove the rest. Prime the bare metal with metal primer, then brush on a metal paint ( you won't want to get any damp into the electrics) Or use something like Rustolium. When dry, re assemble fitting and turn electrics back on.
PS: If too bad or you want to change look, you can always use sticky back Contact if appropriate. Best wishes..........
The only alternative to removing the fixture would be if you can tuck paper around the fixture to protect the ceiling while you are painting it. Yes, you can sand the fixture and then use a Rustoleum spray paint.
Make sure there is no electricity to the light. Tape and cover anything you might get paint on. If you are leaving it up, you will be working overhead, so have a safe surface to stand on. Believe me when I say it will be much easier if you can have someone help you take it down. The rust removal can be messy as can the painting. Rustoleum makes some great spray paint once you get all the rust off. The parts of the light that attach to the lights, where they connect should be taped and covered. For rust removal I recently used WD40, a sanding block, and a power sander and it worked great. Wear gloves and eye protection. If you are spray painting, it is a good idea to wrar a mask.
Yes. Turn off the power. Remove the bulbs. Tape off the area around the fixture and tape over the holes where the bulbs go. You can now safely spray paint or paint with a brush. Let dry completely before putting bulbs in and turning the power back on.
I’d cover everything you don’t want covered w paint (wires, ceiling, etc. ) w plastic — use wide strips of Masking Tape and use Spray Paint...
I’m pretty sure you can use Spray Paint. Read the can label or go into a Paint Store and ask advise.
