Eliminate the source of moisture and dampness.

Place Damp Rid products throughout the space. I prefer the ones that are designed to hang in a closet over the buckets.

Clean everything with either white vinegar or Odo-Ban.

Newspaper, activated charcoal, and baking soda are also good at eliminating odor. However, Odo-Ban is my go to because I love the clean scent and it also disinfects.

You probably need a dehumidifier in the basement

Hi ! First of is important to find out why ... Just know in my case we tried everything and never found out why !!!! We had no signs of dampness or mold / mildew ...we cleaned and painted everything , we pulled out the carpet and padding changed the air filters , removed old insulation from the crawlspace and replaced it and encapsulated it , we even put in a house dehumidifier !

The smell was only in our entryway , ugh .. I left charcoal units , tried air fresheners , even a bar or Irish spring soap ! But when ever we would come back 2 weeks later , as soon as we walked in , we were hit with that musty smell. Then quite by accident , I had found something that worked ! Once weekend I brought some flavored coffee with us , we tried it , it smelled great , but just tasted ok ...when we left I forgot to bring it with us , I had left the ground coffee in a sealed Ziploc bag on the kitchen counter. When we came back 2 weeks later , the house smelled GREAT ! And no musty odor !!!

I don't know why this worked ??? But it did . Now that we have finally moved in the issue is gone ... Maybe from the cooking smells or having Windows and doors open on a regular basis and fresh air getting in ??? Do all you can to try and find out why your house has the smell , get rid of all things that could have absorbed the smell . Good luck !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that you MUST find where moisture is coming in to be finally rid of the musty odor. Yes, you can use a dehumifier, etc. but that will need to run continuously until you find the source.

I also agree that OdoBan from Home Depot is my go-to for odor elimination and disinfecting.
