Sprinkle baking soda in the drawers and leave overnight. Then wipe up. Place a small dish of baking soda in the drawers after to help keep absorbing the smells
Hi Deb,
Give them a good scrub out and then sprinkle with baking soda to suck up excess damp, and leave draw open to the air for a bit.....Best wishes.
You may want to prime and paint them! That will kill lots of the smell. We’ve got more ideas around musty smells that worked in our mobile home here: https://www.frugalfamilytimes.com/2019/04/how-to-get-rid-of-musty-smell.html?m=1
Eliminate the source of moisture and dampness.
Clean everything with either white vinegar or Odo-Ban.
Newspaper, activated charcoal, and baking soda are also good at eliminating odor. However, Odo-Ban is my go to because I love the clean scent and it also disinfects.
Pull them out, clean and let dry in the sun if possible. You can keep silica or bamboo charcoal to prevent mustiness.
You could shellac the drawers, that will seal in any smells.
Vinegar method
Step 1
Dilute 6 tbsp. of white vinegar in 6 cups of water in a sauce pan. Heat the pan to a soft boil, then remove the pan from the heat.
Step 2
Place your flatware in the heated vinegar solution. Allow to soak for 15 minutes.
Step 3
Remove the flatware and dry it with a soft cotton cloth.
