If the pot is that age, then it is most likely solid brass, rather than brass coated.
Do you have any idea what kind of paint is on it, or where the paint came from?
It sounds crazy, but try vinegar, salt and ketchup. Here's a great post with more details.

To remove paint, use paint stripper. Once paint is off, ketchup works great for brass cleaning.
