How can I protect exposed tree roots in the front yard?

Plant shade plants between roots. Create a shade garden to protect roots. Ferns and Hostas work and look great.
Mulch sounds like the best solution. Take a look at this link:

Mulch, a ground cover like pachysandra or vinca or plant flowers around the trees drip line might be an option.
I would bring in a load of top soil.
