Hi Dee. I would use fabric paint. You can purchase it at Michael's or Hobby Lobby for $5 to $8. I looked on Amazon for fabric paint and it seemed that they sell it in sets for a little more $$.
You can use stencils and craft fabric paint. Put in dryer to set the paint. Another option is to use Sharpie pens.
Fabric paint you can buy at any craft or fabric store or on-line. You can also use permanent markers like Sharpies....easier than paint!
Fabric paint is wonderful. I like the SoSoft brand. It comes in plenty of colors and is actually soft!
Sharpie is permanent. Should not run when washed. To play it safe place in dryer to set it.
Use fabric paint ,Michael’s crafts also sells Buffy paint if you want something like that
