Start with a lot of research. This is a job you don't want to do twice. If you are going to do a complete makeover, label doors and drawers so you now where they go back and put all hardware in sealed container with screws so nothing gets lost.
By cleaning them with Dawn dish washing liquid...not much...then rinse with a damp towel. Allow to dry...then if it looks as good as you want them to, add clear coat of lacquer for wood...if not...paint
