Call an exterminator. Chances are there is remediation work to be completed. You probably will need to replace insulation and sanitize the area.
Terminex does free inspections. Til then put out a small dish of Tabasco sauce or jalapeno juice. Sprinkle hot peppers. Inside and out near any openings

How do I get rid of rats?
Once rats are gone, you'll need to thoroughly sanitize, as recommended, then seal entry points with heavy duty hardware cloth, securely screwed into home's exterior.
Insure your chimney is adequately secured from entry. Check for any entry possibilities near foundation or roof lines.
Remove outdoor wood piles, straw and hay, dryer lint in outside venting, tall vegetation within 100' of your home where rodents can hide. Remove animal feces and pet foods, bird foods/feeders, etc.
If you compost, move the bin far from your house, and be careful what you put in the bin.
Squirrels are attracted to pumpkins, so it may be the same for other rodents.
Keep mulch at least 18" to 2' from your foundation, to reduce hiding places.
Mary's suggestion of spraying hot sauce or similar is very helpful, until problem is resolved.
Neighbor has old cars parked in his property, I believe that’s where they come from.
